“I CAN’T WAIT FOR MY NEXT TEST!” I can’t believe my son actually said those words, but he did. It sounds foreign, doesn’t it? It sounds crazy, right? I would not believe it either except I heard it with my own ears. Why would he say that? At 12 years old, he is pursuing a black belt in karate. The system of study requires discipline and training. It demands heart and skill. At regular intervals, Austin along with his fellow students faces a belt test. It is the opportunity to earn the next belt. He simply cannot wait to “belt up.” Belting up signifies a new level. It is the test that shows how much he has progressed. My son is so ready to move forward and develop his karate mojo, that he welcomes the test. I wish we were like that about the tests we face in life. If we are honest, not many of us ever welcome a test. Your tomorrow is filled with blessings, but it is also filled with testings. Life’s journey has obstacles. When we graduate from college or we start a new business or we begin a new position or get a promotion, there are rocks in the road ahead.
God uses tests to build something in us. Our trial may be for patience to grow in us. “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience” (James 1:2-3). Our trial might be for God’s glory. “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls” (1 Peter 1:6).
To receive the blessings of tomorrow, we will face tests. There may be some difficult moments for us in the future, but God keeps us and is not absent. Endure the testing of your future with a patient and expectant heart, because God is up to good for you. It’s time to belt up.
